Hans Schmid (musician)

Hans Schmid (born November 20, 1893 in Kleintajax near Znaim , † May 27, 1987 in America) was an Austrian composer, arranger and conductor.

His father was a farmer and dance musician in a dance band, in which Hans Schmid also played as a child. At the age of ten he attended the music school in Znojmo and wrote his first compositions.

At the age of 15 Schmid joined the regimental music service of the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment "Archduke Rainer" No. 59 as a music eleve , as he was unable to study music in Vienna for financial reasons. During the First World War he became head of the regimental music and rose to the rank of sergeant. In 1915 Schmid was stationed in Galicia , where he composed the Rainer March . In 1917 he was temporarily transferred to the regimental music of the kuk 1. Tiroler Jäger Regiment "Kaiserjäger" , where he served under Karl Mühlberger . At the end of the war he was back with Infantry Regiment No. 59.

From 1919 Schmid was community secretary and bandmaster in Tamsweg and between 1922 and 1925 also community secretary in Straßwalchen . There he was also conductor of the theater company orchestra. Then Schmid moved to Salzburg. On May 1, 1938, he became a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 6,319,577 ). In Salzburg he directed the Maxglan music band until 1947; he also founded his own salon orchestra and was a member of the Mozarteum orchestra . During the Second World War , Schmid was the head of a chemical company and was deployed in the air defense.

Schmid and his wife emigrated to Salt Lake City , USA, in the 1950s . There he founded a music studio and continued to work as a composer, music teacher and conductor. After returning to Salzburg for a short time in 1964, Schmid finally settled in Salt Lake City. A grave of honor in the Salzburg municipal cemetery commemorates him.

Schmid composed a total of over 250 works, including 70 marches and over 30 concert pieces. He also wrote two operettas, Der Graf vom Wienerwald and Bauernblut .
