Hans Soeder

Hans Soeder (born October 18, 1891 in Berlin , † August 4, 1962 in Basel ) was a German architect and university professor .

Life

From 1910, Soeder studied architecture with Friedrich Pützer and art history with Wilhelm Pinder at the Technical University of Darmstadt and architecture with Theodor Fischer at the Technical University of Munich . In 1921 he worked as an architect in Wetzlar . He was a member of the architects' association Der Ring and the German Werkbund . From 1928 he was a member of the Darmstadt Secession and from 1931 lived again in Darmstadt.

He received in 1933 in Dusseldorf, and again in 1939 prohibition , ban on participation in public procurement competitions and withdrawal. In 1944 his apartment in Darmstadt was destroyed, after which he lived in Jugenheim an der Bergstrasse. The doctor and writer Michael Soeder is a son of Hans Soeder.

Teaching and impact as a university professor

Hans Soeder applied to be a workshop manager at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919 , and from 1923–1931 he taught as a professor of architecture at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule Kassel, of which he was the managing director. 1932–1933 he was a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he was dismissed in 1933 at the same time as Paul Klee and Heinrich Campendonk . In 1944 he became a professor at the Technical University in Breslau.

In 1947 Soeder was appointed to the Wiesbaden School of Crafts and Applied Arts. He developed a "program for the establishment of a school for applied arts in Wiesbaden"

Soeder developed a concept that made the technical teaching the basis of artistic design, as the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau had tried out between 1919 and 1932. For his concept, which he implemented as director of the school from 1948, he created the name “Werk-Kunst-Schule” (Werkkunstschule). This term was temporarily adopted by 18 other (earlier) German arts and crafts schools before they developed into technical colleges and art colleges from the early 1970s.

Soeder established a school in Wiesbaden that was "committed to social and ethical responsibility". In her work she placed "the practical use of formal and material solidity" at the center. One of Soeder's students in Wiesbaden was the industrial designer Dieter Rams , who repeatedly referred to Hans Soeder's innovative teaching and training concepts in lectures and writings.

In 2003, the artist Silke Riechert referred to a design by Hans Soeder from 1920 in an exhibition “settings # 1” in Berlin.

In Kassel, a street in the area of ​​the documenta urbana was named after Hans Soeder .

Soeder's estate is in the Bauhaus Archive Berlin.
