Hans Spethmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Spethmann (born December 11, 1885 - March 19, 1957 ) was a German economic geographer and geologist . He lived in Essen , among other places , where he worked for the mining association . He spent his old age in Lübeck .

His first publications dealt with the geology and morphology of the Baltic Sea before he became an assistant at Otto Krümmel in Kiel . He wrote papers on Icelandic culture .

As a 22-year-old student, he took part in an Iceland expedition in July 1907 under the direction of the Berlin scientists Walther von Knebel and Max Rudloff to geological exploration of the little-known Askja volcanic massif and its crater lakes Öskjuvatn and Víti (Askja) in the central Icelandic highlands. Thereby came v. Knebel and Rudloff probably perished on the lake on July 10, 1907 while exploring the larger Öskjuvatn. Spethmann survived because at that time he was doing research in Askja, far from the scene of the accident. After his return to the base, he did not find the two researchers and the boat. He remained the only source of information for the unfortunate event. In August 1907 he accompanied another Icelandic search expedition to shed light on the fate of the missing, which due to the mysterious circumstances has not yet been fully clarified. In September he returned to Germany.

Spethmann taught, among other things, as a private lecturer at the universities of Zurich , Berlin and Cologne .

He wrote numerous treatises on the geology and economic geography of Central Europe, in particular important publications on the Ruhr area and Ruhr mining . He also dealt with the lives of Hans von und zu Loewenstein , Franz Haniel , Johann Dinnendahl , Franz Dinnendahl , Ernst Honigmann and Friedrich Marthe .

In the spring of 1913 Spethmann founded together with Cahnheim, Herrmann and Henry Erkes Association of Iceland Friends , which lasted until the Second World War. He was on the board of the Cologne Society.

He was born with Margarethe Spethmann. Besthorn married. His son Dieter Spethmann was a lawyer and former CEO of Thyssen . His estate of writings, including unpublished manuscripts and a collection of posters from the years 1916 to 1924, is now in the Essen City Archives .
