Hans Weigand

Hans Weigand (born June 26, 1954 in Hall in Tirol ) is a contemporary Austrian lithographer, graphic artist, painter, photographer, object artist and musician.

Live and act

Hans Weigand grew up in Absam Tirol. 1978 - 1983 he studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Oswald Oberhuber .

Shaped by the West American art scene - in 1999 he realized the installation "Life / Boat" with Raymond Pettibon and Jason Rhoades at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles - and the musical subculture, Hans Weigand picked up on personalities from the media and pop culture. As a border crosser between visual and applied art, he explores the identities and projection surfaces of society and reacts to everyday phenomena, which he takes to absurdity in seemingly utopian scenarios. Motifs from religion and war, disaster and violence scenes, borrowings from comics and film, the world of surfers, natural backdrops and urban landscapes result in a panopticon of the present.

In this way he gets to grips with banal everyday phenomena, for example with dime novels and film classics (“Cotton 2001”), and always works out common codes and structures. Numerous collaborations complement Weigand's cross-genre work concept.

Weigand works in art and music in parallel, founded the duo "Avoi-dance" with Heimo Zobernig and the band "Crincum Crancum" with Raymond Pettibon , Albert Mayr and Johann Neumeister. His work has been shown in international solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums since 1978. He lives and works in Vienna and St. Martin an der Raab

Quote

“Wood for the palaces! The invention of the woodcut, letterpress printing and etching has accelerated and revived the dawn of the Renaissance no less inexorably just as digital technologies renewed image production at the end of the 20th century. Nevertheless, the traces of old prints hardly signal the force with which the “speaking sheets” intervened in the imagination and created an uncontrollable forum for people's ideas. The grain of the wood or the coarse contours in the hatching of a fabric look more like outdated remnants today, properties of outdated stuff that is at best still valued, cared for and preserved in a rural setting. With the exhibition that will open on February 1, 2014 in the rooms of Niklas Schechinger Fine Art, Hans Weigand thwarted all these beautiful things that were taken for granted. His canvas prints, carved reliefs and carnival monsters conjure up the village garb of tradition without further ado, but just as vehemently confront the hallmarks of old technology with the icons of extremely mobile modernity. In the pigment layer of his canvases, the fragments of sunken printing ink meet the mobility of the latest Photoshop programs, the idol of a rock star meets the melancholy of the lonely silver surfer, the uproar of a wooden drapery mixes with the silhouette of the house in which Hitchcock holds his mother's corpse of a psychotic killer. No surface detail in the artist's objects can be certain of its identity or function. Waves may be piled up from fire and smoke, the peaceful sleep of a saint made from the thick skin of a homeless person, the concrete pillars of blind high-rise bureaucracy made from the wood of a raft that has not carried a shipwrecked person ashore for a long time. The Klötzler from Absam in Tyrol will show this unpredictable background of the pictures right before your eyes. For the first time outside of their traditional area and in a wooden paneling that was designed by an artist, they show in the exhibition Wood the Palaces how much this material, in which pictures, instruments and furniture found a new face centuries ago, is still suitable for dancing can bring.
