Jason Fayette Rhoades (born July 9, 1965 in Newcastle, Placer County , California , † August 1, 2006 in Los Angeles ) was an American artist. Rhoades was known for his spectacular room installations and expansive productions.

Life

Rhoades, son of a Californian farming family, first attended the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) in Oakland (1985–1986), the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) (1986–1988), the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan (1988) and studied a. a. with Paul McCarthy at UCLA (1991-1993). After his first solo exhibition in 1993 at the renowned David Zwirner Gallery in New York , he also achieved his international breakthrough. His works have been shown primarily in Europe, such as in the Kunsthalle Basel , Villa Arson (Nice), Kunsthalle Zürich , Hamburger Kunsthalle , Museum of Modern Art (Frankfurt / M.), Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid) and in the Kunsthalle Wien . Objects are installed in all renowned museums in the world. In 2001 he was a visiting professor at the Städel School in Frankfurt held and presented in Art Container portico in Frankfurt the "Costner Complex".

In 1999 he implemented the monumental object sculpture “Perfect World”, consisting of aluminum beams and wooden platforms, in a spacious setting in the Hamburg Deichtorhallen . For example, he constructed a huge phallus and presented fluorescent tubes, all of which formed a different word for the female genitalia. In 2002 he presented the “PeaRoeFoam” sculpture made from dried peas, salmon eggs and expanded polystyrene. His object “Garage Renovation New York” is a gigantic hodgepodge of everyday objects, toys and tools, garbage and waste paper; it was shown in 2004 at the opening of Friedrich Christian Flick's art collection in the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin . Rhoades has inspired numerous other young artists with his work.

Rhoades, who lived and worked in Los Angeles, died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 41 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center , Los Angeles. He leaves behind his wife, the artist Rachel Khedoori and his daughter Rubi.
