Hans Wilhelm Vahlefeld (born August 14, 1928 in Lüdenscheid ; † November 28, 2013 in Hamburg ) was a German author and foreign correspondent .

life and career

Vahlefeld studied philosophy and law in Bonn , Hamburg and Munich and completed his studies in 1953 with a dissertation on "Pseudo-religious ideologies and ethics". He then attended the Werner Friedmann Institute (today: German School of Journalism ) in Munich, before starting in 1954 as an editor at the newly founded German television in Hamburg. In 1958 he was released from work and traveled to the Far East with his own film camera and typewriter. At that time, the finished but undeveloped films still had to be shipped by plane to Hamburg for the Tagesschau and Vahlefeld recorded the texts on site with tape, as his film camera did not allow sound recording. As a result, Vahlefeld used a ballpoint pen as an imitation microphone in his self-filmed reports and no setting could take longer than 20 seconds because of the clockwork-operated amateur camera. From 1960 to 1968 Vahlefeld was then a permanent ARD TV correspondent in Tokyo and Hong Kong . He then worked for two years as an international correspondent for the daily newspaper Die Welt before returning to NDR , where he became deputy editor-in-chief and worked as a radio correspondent in Washington for eight years . In 1991 he retired. From 1992 to 1996 he was a lecturer for East Asian Studies at the University of Hamburg .

In numerous books he dealt with the economic, political and cultural development of the Far East.
