Hans Witzig

Hans Witzig (born September 21, 1889 in Wil , Rafzerfeld ; † October 29, 1973 Zurich ) was a Swiss art historian , sculptor , illustrator , graphic artist and author .

Witzig attended secondary school in Zurich- Aussershil from 1903 to 1905 and completed his teacher training at the teachers' seminar in Küsnacht in 1909 . Witzig worked as a teacher from 1909 to 1914 and then attended further training courses in drawing at the Technikum Winterthur and the ETH Zurich .

In the 1920s, Witzig designed several political posters and caricatures. From 1923 he studied art history at the University of Zurich and received his doctorate in 1926 with a dissertation on experience and drawing . From 1929 until his retirement in 1955, Witzig was a specialist teacher for drawing and art history at the Zurich daughter school .

Witzig illustrated numerous children's, youth and school books and in 1969 received the Swiss children's and youth book award for his detective novel Der Nachtschratt . In addition, from the 1920s to the 1950s he illustrated over twenty books for Olga Meyer and others for Alfred Huggenberger . He was also active as a designer of model sheets and instructions for making dolls.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Witzig was also active as a sculptor and created various sculptures for fountains.

Witzig married Marie, née Walter (1891–1969), in 1914. They had three children together. In 1970 he married his former student Edith Klemenz (1914–2000). Hans Witzig found his final resting place in the Witikon cemetery .

His estate, which includes over 2,000 drawings, drafts and prints, over 300 books and sketchbooks, 38 paintings, 60 sculptures, 347 printing blocks made of wood and metal, as well as some photographs and documents, has been kept in the graphic collection of the Zurich Central Library since 1983 .
