Hans Zötl (born September 4, 1846 in Schärding , † December 25, 1938 in Eferding ) was an Austrian lawyer and local researcher. He was also a regional judge and founder of the Stelzhamer Association.

Live and act

Hans Zötl was born the son of a dyer and studied law in Vienna after attending grammar schools in Linz and Krems. During his studies in 1869 he became a member of the Academic Burschenschaft Upper Austrian Teutons in Vienna. In 1870 he became an intern at the Vienna Regional Court in criminal matters and also worked for a notary. In 1872 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD . In 1874 he became an adjunct in St. Johann im Pongau and shortly afterwards took over the management of the Saalfelden im Pinzgau district court. He moved to Urfahr-Linz. In 1885 he became district judge in Leonfelden and was most recently a district judge in Eferding.

In Upper Austria, Zötl organized numerous lecture evenings on the work of Franz Stelzhamer , who was almost forgotten after his death.

He saved the “Muadastübl” in Pramet from decay and gave Hans Schnopfhagen the advice to use the “Homatgsang” instead of the Stelzhamer poem “Da gehad Schuasta” for his melody. Zötl is known as the "father of the Upper Austrian national anthem ".
