He grew up in the Freiburg district of Günterstal and graduated from high school in 1916. Due to an illness he began to work artistically and discovered his calling as a painter. In 1918, after his first marriage, he moved to a secluded house in Schönberg an der Bergstrasse . Life on the Bergstrasse and his impressions from the Odenwald had a great influence on his artistic development and his physical recovery.

As a result, he dealt intensively with the painting methods of medieval masters and had a lively exchange with Max Doerner . Two study stays in the Netherlands meant that he used not only watercolors , pen and silver pen drawings , but also medieval painting methods. His pictures from this period found sales, for example in public offices and were also shown in exhibitions.

In 1941 Geyer moved back to Freiburg. The impressions he got of his hometown, which was destroyed in the war, were reflected in the dream images that were created during this time. In 1949 he married his second wife Isolde, with whom he lived in Emmendingen , where he created the " Tafelwerk " he had planned for a long time , a two-meter-high convertible shrine with three successive trilogies of pictures.

From 1954 he lived again in Freiburg, from where he made trips to Alsace , Switzerland and Italy , which gave him plenty of inspiration for his work. He died in a thunderstorm in a car accident.

His brother Helmuth was also an artist, he illustrated numerous books.
