The Hanse Office in Brussels is the joint representation of the German states, Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, to the European Union .

The Hanse Offices in St. Petersburg and Gdansk are also joint agencies .

The Hanse Office emerged from the information office of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg founded in 1985. This office was the first regional office in Brussels. Since Schleswig-Holstein joined the company in 1987, it has operated under its current name. At times, Lower Saxony was also represented in the Hanse Office. In the first few years, the former commissioner Wilhelm Haferkamp was heavily involved in the Hanse Office.

The tasks of the Hanse Office include, on the one hand, the early transmission of information about current EU policies, its legislation and its funding programs to the respective state governments (early warning system). To this end, the Hanse Office maintains contacts with all EU institutions, but also with the federal government and the other member states and regions. On the other hand, it represents the interests of both countries.

In addition, the Hanse Office represents and promotes the two countries and their diversity, especially in the economic and cultural areas, and organizes appropriate events and exhibitions.

In addition to the state governments, the Hanse Office also offers its services to businesses, educational institutions and other institutions right down to individual persons. In particular, the Hanse Office maintains partnerships with the other representations of the northern German states and the regional offices of the entire Baltic Sea region.

The Hanse Office is run by two equal office managers. Claus Müller is the representative of Hamburg. He is also head of the European Union Affairs Department in the Hamburg Senate Chancellery. Thorsten Augustin is the representative of Schleswig-Holstein, he is also head of the department for European, Baltic and North Sea affairs in the Kiel State Chancellery.

Hanse Office St. Petersburg

The Hanse Office in St. Petersburg was opened in 2005 as a joint agency for the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Under the direction of Natalia Berezhkova, it is intended to help expand economic, scientific and cultural cooperation with the regions in Russia . To this end, the Hanse Office maintains local contacts and develops joint projects between the two federal states and the regions of St. Petersburg, Novgorod , Kaliningrad and Pskow .

Hanse Office Danzig

Since 2008, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein have also had a joint Hanse Office in Gdansk, which has existed as the Schleswig-Holstein office since 1995. Marek Choromanski is responsible for contacts to the regional administrative structures, for delegation trips and cooperation projects in the Polish port and former Hanseatic city.
