The Saxony Liaison Office Brussels ( Engl. Saxony Liaison Office Brussels , French. Bureau de Liaison de Saxe à Bruxelles ), short SVB , is an institution of the Free State of Saxony in Brussels . It represents the Free State at all European institutions (for example the European Parliament or the Committee of the Regions ).

office

The office is part of the Saxon State Chancellery and belongs to the portfolio of the State Minister and Head of the State Chancellery . After the state elections in Saxony in 2009 , the Saxon State Ministry of Justice was expanded to include Europe and was under this ministry under Jürgen Martens until 2014.

There are currently 16 employees in the office, the majority of whom are temporarily seconded from the line ministries.

tasks

First and foremost, the office observes the activities of the European institutions and the institutions based in Brussels and provides information about them. On the other hand, it notifies them of news from Saxony, such as what positions the Free State takes on current political issues. For this purpose, the office prepares visits by members of the Saxon government and experts to Brussels and encourages visits to Saxony.

It also maintains contacts with the European institutions as well as the liaison offices of other European regions, companies and associations.

It also serves as a contact point for Saxon citizens and companies in Brussels. In return, it draws attention to Saxony through exhibitions and specialist events.

Since 2007, the office has published a weekly newsletter in Brussels , which provides information on the activities of the European institutions.

history

The Free State has had an office in Brussels since the summer of 1991, but at that time it was still called the Sachsenbüro Brussels . At first it was housed with the other East German offices in the former GDR embassy building. On February 19, 2003, the property on Avenue d'Aderghem was purchased; the renovation work began on June 7, 2004. The office floors were handed over on December 1, 2004, so that the employees of the office could move into their new quarters on December 9. The entire handover took place on March 22, 2005. In April 2005, the then Prime Minister Georg Milbradt inaugurated the building.

The current head of the Saxony Liaison Office in Brussels is Wolf-Eberhard Kuhl, his deputy is Torsten Brand. Previous leaders were:

  • Hans-Werner Dahl , autumn 1991 to August 1999
  • Klaus Kofler , September 1999 to December 2002
  • Ulrich Beyer , January 2003 to June 2007

building

The current building is located at 67 avenue d'Aderghem in the Etterbeek district and is therefore in the immediate vicinity of the buildings of the European Commission and the European Parliament.

The four-storey building was erected at the beginning of the 20th century as a Dutch commercial and economic representative and is included in a closed block development. It has a historicizing sandstone facade , on the upper arched field of which the Dutch national coat of arms rests, reminding of the building's first use.

After the acquisition of the building by the Free State, it was conceptually revised: The three upper floors with its offices serve as work rooms, while the ground floor level and the newly built winter garden serve as an event area.

The Saxon colors white and green were used for the interior design and works by contemporary artists from Saxony were used for the wall surfaces.
