authority

As a department of the State Chancellery, the representation reports to the head of the Bavarian State Chancellery Florian Herrmann in his capacity as Minister of State for Federal and European Affairs and the Media .

In the Bavarian representation, all ministries of the Bavarian state government are represented by so-called " mirror presentations ".

In October 2010, a liaison office for the Bavarian State Parliament was set up in the Bavarian representation .

tasks

The Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU supports the Bavarian State Minister for Federal and European Affairs and the Media in fulfilling his tasks at European level. This is done through:

  • Providing information to the state government, the state parliament, the administration, Bavarian companies and citizens about current affairs in the EU
  • Influence on political decision-making in the EU
  • Presentation of Bavarian traditions and Bavarian culture abroad
  • Advice and support in contacting EU bodies
  • Cooperation with other European institutions

The Bavarian Representation organizes around 300 events a year on political, economic or cultural topics related to Bavaria and receives around 12,000 visitors a year. The representation provides information about current political issues in the bi-weekly European report on its website.

history

The Bavarian legation founded in 1824 was one of Bavaria's first representative offices in Brussels . The Bavarian embassy in Belgium was dissolved in 1914.

The "Brussels Information Office" set up in 1987 can be seen as the forerunner of today's representation. In 1994 it was already called "Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the European Union" and in 2004 the move took place in the current premises, in the renovated building of the former Pasteur Institute (until 1986) opposite the EU Parliament . Mathias Pfeil designed the conversion

The Institut Pasteur Brussels , originally Institut Antirabique et Bactériologique du Brabant , was founded in 1900 by the Brabant Provincial Council. The Nobel Prize winner Jules Bordet , coming from the Institut Pasteur Paris, was the first director of the institute. From January 1, 1995, it was subordinate to the Belgian Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Environment. In 1996 it merged with the Scientific Institute for Public Health .

building

The Bavarian representation is opposite the EU Parliament on the edge of the Park Leopold. The building complex consists of three buildings: the “Institute”, the “Villa” and the “Marstall”, has a floor area of 5500 square meters and a usable area of 2,000 square meters. It was built in 1903 as a microbiological research facility of the Pasteur Institute, which was used by the later Nobel Prize winner Jules Bordet for research in the fields of immunology and bacteriology . From 1940 his son, Paul Bordet, ran the facility, which stayed in this building until 1987. In 2001 the Free State of Bavaria bought the property for 29.4 million euros and carried out extensive renovations. The renovation was planned by the engineering office Uwe Schreier Würzburg, the conversions were carried out by the architects Archi + I, Cerau from Brussels, for which there was a nomination for the MIPIM Award 2005 in the category “Renovated Office Buildings”. Reinhold Bocklet is considered to be the “finder and inventor” of the renovation project .

In 2004, the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria moved into the renovated building.

Due to the splendid, castle-like construction, the Bavarian representation was at first mockingly referred to as "Schloss Neuwahnstein". From Brussels diplomatic circles, however, the assessment is also quoted that “Bavaria has the most popular representation in Brussels”.

Institute

The institute building was built in 1903 in the style of historicism and until 1987 housed the laboratories of the microbiological research facility of the Pasteur Institute. Since the renovation, the building has housed the representative rooms of the Prime Minister , the European Minister , the management of the representation, conference and office rooms as well as a wine bar .

villa

The villa was built in 1905 as the residence of the director of the research facility and his family. Since the renovation, the building has housed office and meeting rooms for the employees of the Bavarian representation.

Stables

The building of the Marstall was built between 1903 and 1905 and used as the horse stable of the research institute. Since the renovation, the building has been home to a pub, a kitchen, offices, as well as a large event hall ("Jules Bordet Hall") and a small event hall ("Paul Bordet Hall"), which together offer space for around 300 visitors.
