Hanspeter Neuhold

Hanspeter Neuhold (born January 29, 1942 in Budapest ) is an Austrian lawyer and was Professor of International Relations and International Law at the University of Vienna until 2010 .

Education and professional career

Neuhold completed his law studies at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in law in 1965 . This was followed by a position as a research assistant at the Institute for International Law and International Relations at his alma mater between 1966 and 1975 . At the same time, Neuhold completed a postgraduate course in 1967 at the Institut des hautes études internationales at the Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris .

In 1968/69 he was a member of the Austrian delegation at the Vienna Contract Law Conference . The following year he worked as a lawyer for the State Department and in 1971 was a visiting professor at Columbia University and at the United Nations Education and Research Institute .

From 1973 Neuhold was responsible for the organization of the summer academy at the diplomatic academy in Vienna and in 1975 he was awarded a junior professorship for international law and international relations at the University of Vienna . In addition to this activity, which he held until 1980, Neuhold worked as an advisor to the Ministry of Defense and was a visiting professor at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs in Ottawa . In 1980 he was appointed associate professor for international law and international relations at the University of Vienna. He was a member of the Austrian delegation to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe in Madrid in 1981 and in Vienna between 1986 and 1989 . In 1990 Neuhold finally received a full professorship , which he held until his retirement in 2010.

In addition to his university career, Neuhold continued to belong to various diplomatic delegations in his home country. For example, he took part in the World Conference on Human Rights and, as a member of an international group of experts, advised the Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy, Hans van den Broek, on issues relating to the common foreign and security policy . He also held the office of Vice President of the German Society for International Law between 1997 and 2001 . He was also visiting professor at the University of Leiden and the College of Europe in Bruges .
