history

Baroque St. Josef Chapel in Wellheim-Hard

A woman's grave from the Early Bronze Age was found west of Hard . Today's place is on the Roman road Wellheim - Nassenfels . At 250 there was a Roman house nearby. The place, in which around 14 families lived a long time ago, was grouped around a "Hüll", a small body of stagnant water that was leveled in 1972. The place name indicates a forest location and thus a clearing village . It belonged to the monastery of Eichstätt - with the exception of two Palatinate-Neuburgian courts and six fiefdoms of the Benedictine nuns - Bergen Monastery , which later passed to the Jesuit college in Neuburg an der Donau . From 1817 to 1833 the village belonged to the principality of Eichstätt of the dukes of Leuchtenberg ; At that time (1821) there were 19 families with a total of 77 people in 15 properties. Until 1838 the pastor of Wellheim had the tithe rights in Hard.

Iron ore used to be found around Hard . At Hard there is a quartz sand deposit that has a very high quartz content.

On January 1, 1971, the then independent municipality of Hard was incorporated into the Wellheim market together with Gammersfeld.

Predominantly agriculturally oriented, there were four full-time and ten part-time farms in the village with 136 inhabitants. In 2005 Hard had 225 inhabitants.

The Catholic village chapel St. Josef was built between 1725 and 1730. It belongs to the parish of Wellheim. Since 2015 there has been a private St. Walburga chapel in the village with furnishings by the Eichstatt sculptor Rupert Fieger .
