location

The wasteland is located southeast of Wellheim between Feldmühle and Rennertshofen on the southern slope of the Wellheimer dry valley in the Altmühltal nature park .

history

In 1184 (?) A farm is mentioned here. In 1255, the knight Heinrich von Hofstetten bought the farm from the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Rebdorf in order to give it back to the monastery immediately. In 1486 the property was exchanged for the Eichstätt Monastery, which gave it to the Counts of Helfenstein as a fief at Wellheim Castle . Extinct than this in 1627, the farm was sold and remained until 1802 the monastery Rebdorf handlöhnig . From 1817 to 1833 belonging to the Principality of Eichstätt of the Dukes of Leuchtenberg , six people lived in the wilderness in 1821. In 1848, Count Aloys von Arco-Stepperg bought the property, which in 1952 was inherited by the Baron von Redwitz .

Today the farm is the seat of a sport horse trading company.

Nature worth seeing

300 meters north of Espenlohe there is a peat pond in the direction of Feldmühle in the Wellheim dry valley . It is 1.25 hectares in size, is framed by a belt of trees and bushes and has a bushy island. The pond with diverse surrounding flora and fauna was created by an abandoned peat dig .
