The building was built in 1959. It was entered under No. H 112 on August 1, 2011 in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach .

location

The house is centrally located in the city center in Rheydt, between Hauptstrasse and Marktstrasse.

architecture

It is a four-story, eaves- facing residential and commercial building with sloping roofs to the sides and to the front . The ground floor is uniformly designed as a shop window area . On the dark wall surface, gold anodized frames hold the shop windows and the recessed door from the building period repeats this design. The three upper floors above contain six window axes between white-painted reinforced concrete frame , which contain two-part, broadly positioned windows (windows renewed). The parapet fields under the windows are again designed in the style of the authoritative example at Hauptstrasse 30 as red panels with a fine white diamond pattern . The relatively flat sloping roof surface above is covered with three small dormers with segmental arches .

Before the Second World War, the plot of today's residential and commercial building at Harmoniestraße 3 was part of the residential and commercial building of tobacco merchant Paul Wallraf. After it was destroyed in the war in 1943, it lay idle for more than 15 years ( building application 1959: “cleared rubble site”) before the new building that exists today was erected in 1959. For the execution as a four-storey building at the front and five-storey at the rear, a dispensation had to be granted by the applicable local statutes. The architect was Paul Bernert from Rheydt, who, as a former architect of the Leitl staff, also planned the neighboring commercial buildings at Harmoniestraße 1 and Hauptstraße 26 built on behalf of Wallraf .

For the architectural-historical and urban planning classification, see also the comments on Hauptstrasse 30 . The main design features of the facade are largely unchanged both in the shop window zone (distribution of shop window areas, gold anodized framing, door) as well as in the upper floors (proportion, color design) and in the roof area (roof pitch, roofing, dormers). In particular, the red and white upper floors characterize the house as an integral part of the important reconstruction ensemble of Wallraf's buildings on the corner of Hauptstrasse and Harmoniestrasse. It is noteworthy that the design applied to the house at Hauptstrasse 30 in 1948 was still used in a formative manner eleven years later.

As part of the aforementioned reconstruction ensemble, the house at Harmoniestraße 3 is important for Rheydt, City of Mönchengladbach.

Preservation and use of its facade are in the public interest for scientific, architectural, historical and urban planning reasons. The facade (street-side wall and roof surfaces) therefore fulfills the requirements of § 2 DSchG NRW for classification as a monument .
