Harold L. Mitchell (born July 28, 1897 in Waynesburg , Pennsylvania , † October 21, 1997 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania) was an American neurologist and psychiatrist .

Life

Family and education

Harold L. Mitchell, son of Thomas Jefferson Mitchell and Margaret Wise Mitchell, from Borough Waynesburg, county seat of Greene County , devoted himself to studying medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in 1919 after attending public schools the degree of Bachelor of Science , in 1921 he became the MD PhD .

Harold L. Mitchell married Sarah Jane Stretton on December 1, 1921. The children Harold L. junior and Enid Mitchell, wife of Dr. Lester A, Dunmire. He died in Pittsburgh in October 1997 at the age of 100.

Professional background

Harold L. Mitchell held an internship at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh after graduating . He then completed specialist training in neurology at the Neurological Institute in New York City from 1922 to 1923 . After returning to Pittsburgh, he opened a private neuropsychiatric practice . In 1924 he took up a teaching position at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, in 1946 he was appointed full professor . In addition, he was appointed consulting neurologist at the University Medical Center and in 1948 head of the neuropsychiatric service at St. Francis Hospital.

Harold L. Mitchell, who received a Certificate in Neurology and Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1942, served as President of the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society and the Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine. Harold L. Mitchell, elected a member of the American Medical Association , was one of the leading neurologists and psychiatrists in the United States of his day. The University of Pittsburgh Medical School awards the Harold L. Mitchell Prize for Neurology annually in his honor.
