Harold Saxton Burr
Harold Saxton Burr (born April 18, 1889 in Lowell , Massachusetts , † February 17, 1973 ) was an American professor of anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine. In 1939 he caused a sensation in the media by proving that salamanders have an electric field . He subsequently took the thesis that this applies to all living beings.
Life
Harold Saxton Burr was the son of Hanford M. Burr and Clara H. Saxton, both originally from Connecticut . In 1907 he graduated from Technical High School in Springfield and then attended Springfield College, where his father was a professor of economics. From 1908 he studied in the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University . There he received his doctorate in 1915 under Ross G. Harrison. In 1929 he became a professor of anatomy.
In 1911 he married Jean Forrest Chandler, and in 1919 their son Peter was born.
In his early career, Burr was mainly concerned with the central nervous system , later with the development of nerves. This led to the investigation of electrodynamic processes in 1939. From then on he investigated the electrical potential of plants and animals.
At the turn of the year 1957/58 he went into retirement. Between 1916 and 1956 he was involved in more than 90 scientific articles as author or co-author.
