Harry Lookofsky

Harold "Harry" Lookofsky (born October 31, 1913 in Paducah , Kentucky , † June 8, 1998 ) was an American jazz violinist .

Lookofsky began as a classical musician, studied in St. Louis and was a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1934 to 1938 and of the NBC Symphony Orchestra in New York from 1938 to 1950 . He also played dance music in the orchestras of Isham Jones (1929) and Vincent Lopez (1934). He worked a lot as a studio musician .

He was an admirer of Joe Venuti and was one of the first violinists to take up bebop . This can be heard on his album Stringsville ( Atlantic Records , 1959) (the bebop solos are all written out and not improvised ) and for Miracle in Strings (1954, Phillips) he recorded the solo parts of the jazz instruments as strings, which he then did in the Overdub process was put together.

Occasionally he played the tenor violin, an instrument with a pitch between cello and viola (to get closer to the tenor saxophone).

He also played with Quincy Jones , Jaco Pastorius , Sarah Vaughan , George Benson , Freddie Hubbard .

He is the father of keyboardist Michael Brown (Left Bank).
