Harry Nick

Harry Nick (born August 15, 1932 in Borowo near Łódź , † December 7, 2014 in Berlin ) was a German economist.

Life

Harry Nick was the son of a forest worker. In January / February 1945 the family moved to Sylda in the Mansfeld Mountains . He attended high school in Hettstedt and was a member of the FDJ district leadership during this time . In 1951 he passed his Abitur. He then worked for a few months as a bar puller at the Hettstedt rolling mill. From 1951 to 1954 he studied industrial economics at the University of Planning Economics in Berlin-Karlshorst. The topic of his diploma thesis was: "The character of the socio-economic changes in Czechoslovakia after World War II". He then worked until 1962 as an assistant and later as senior assistant a. Perception doc. at the Institute for Political Economy there in the Department of Political Economy of Socialism . In December 1959 he did his doctorate on the subject of "The accumulation of basic funds in LPG type III (stable buildings)". From 1962 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the SED. From 1964 he was a lecturer there. In 1965 he completed his habilitation with the thesis: "The fund advance as a special type of expenditure". In 1967 Nick was appointed full professor of political economy. Harry Nick was head of the research area “Economic and Social Problems of Scientific and Technical Progress” at the Institute for Political Economy and worked in this function until 1990. His main areas of work were basic fund economics and financial accounting.

In 1991 he retired.

Nick was a member of the economic policy working group on the PDS executive committee and a member of the board of the Economy and Democracy Forum . From September 1998 to 2012 he was a business columnist for the newspaper Neues Deutschland . The other authors involved in the Kurz, Nick, Luft & Hickel column were Robert Kurz , Christa Luft and Rudolf Hickel .

Nick was a member of the Marxist Forum and a member of the Leibniz Society .
