Hartmanthus is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the German botanist Heidrun Hartmann .

description

The plants of the Hartmanthus genus grow as small to medium-sized, densely leafy dwarf shrubs . The orange internodes are flattened in the upper parts. The sharp, triangular leaves are pale gray-green and have a very smooth, firm surface. They are up to 70 millimeters long, about 15 millimeters wide and up to 20 millimeters thick. Dried up leaves are parchment-like and remain on the plants for many years.

The individual flowers form a persistent, two-pronged ( dichasial ) inflorescence on which the bracts remain for several years. The flower is formed from five sepals , 75 to 117 white to pink petals and up to twelve mostly white thread-like staminodes . The stamens form a cone. The wreath-like nectaries form an irregular ring.

The five- or eight- to ten-compartment fruit capsules have no closure bodies. The reddish brown, oblong egg-shaped seeds are 0.9 to 1 millimeter long and about 0.5 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of the Hartmanthus genus extends in Namibia from the southernmost part of the diamond restricted area to the municipality of Richtersveld in South Africa . The plants grow on slopes containing quartzite. The annual rainfall is less than 100 millimeters.

It was first described in 1995 by Steven A. Hammer (* 1951). The holotype is Hartmanthus pargamentaceus . According to Heidrun Hartmann , the genus Hartmanthus includes the following two species:
