Aizpute ( German  Hasenpot , Hasenpoth , Russian Айзпуте ) is a town in the historic Bandowe ( Bandava ) region in Latvia.

history

Aizpute is first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In 1248 Dietrich von Grüningen , the landmaster in Livonia of the Teutonic Order , had the Hasenpoth order castle built. In 1253, the soft picture of the young settlement was divided into a part belonging to the order, called Ordens-Hasenpoth , and an episcopal part, called Bishop-Hasenpoth . The flourishing city became the seat of both the Knights of the Order of the Goldingen Commandery and the Courland cathedral chapter. The city's wealth declined when the city's port was closed after the Northern War and the nearby city of Liepāja (English: Libau) took on its role as a major trading center on the Baltic coast. The city belonged to the Russian Empire from 1795 and was a district town in the Courland Governorate . A major battle took place here during the Russian Revolution in 1905 .
