The Haunach is a small, approximately 2.7 kilometer long stream in the Bavarian Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park in the area of the municipality of Simmelsdorf , which flows into the Grundelbach from the left and northwest at the village of Hüttenbach . The subterranean upper course of the stream was cut by a quarry and therefore offers a good insight into this water-active river cave.
Source and history
The natural source of the Haunach was destroyed by gravel, today the brook rises at the foot of a vertical quarry wall, about 20 meters below the former ground level. After exiting the gravel works, the stream runs in a south-easterly direction through a narrow forest valley that has already been deeply cut here, close to State Road 2241 . When a road section in this valley was renewed, the stream bed was redesigned. Shortly before the town of Oberndorf , the valley widens slightly, the stream is accompanied by meadows on its west side. In the village itself, the Haunach takes on two shorter tributaries from the left and right, then the stream winds again through meadows and agricultural terrain in an already noticeably wider valley in a south-south-east direction. Shortly before its mouth, the Haunach reaches the village of Hüttenbach , where it flows into the Grundelbach in its valley.
