The Haus zur Sonne is a historic restaurant in Winterthur in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . The building, built in 1557, is considered one of the oldest inns in the city and is classified as a cultural asset of regional importance .
history
The Gasthaus zur Sonne already existed in the Middle Ages and was rebuilt in 1557. The three-part staggered window, which is still visible on the first floor, and the large, hall-like dining room with a plank beam ceiling behind it, should date from this period. In 1670 the owners made extensive structural changes to the inn. In 1800 the building became the property of the Ziegler family, who sold it to the consumer association in 1875 . He set up his headquarters in the building and ran a shop on the ground floor. From 1907 he also sold sea fish in the courtyard, which were an inexpensive alternative to meat, which was comparatively expensive at the time. From 1925 to 1975 a cooperative bookstore was operated on the ground floor.
Todays use
The Winterthur secondary school association, Vitodurania , founded in 1863, has been using the «Sonne» since 1892 as a regular pub. The old gentlemen's association of this connection founded the Vito-Haus zur Sonne association in 1999 , which acquired the building that same year and has been managing it ever since. Today there is a drugstore on the ground floor, while the first floor is still used for catering.
