Swaraj Dweep formerly Havelock Island , engl. Havelock Island is the main island of the Ritchie's Archipelago of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal , which belongs to India . The Andaman Sea extends east of the island . Politically, the island belongs to the Indian Andaman and Nicobar Union territory . It is located about 57 km northeast of Port Blair . It is the largest island in the Ritchie's Archipelago.

Surname

The island was renamed Swaraj Dweep on December 30, 2018 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi . Previously, the island was named after Henry Havelock , a British major general who took part in several campaigns in British India . The archipelago was named after the British geometer John Ritchie, who measured and documented the Andaman region for the East India Company between 1770 and 1785 .

Residents

The island is mainly inhabited by settlers from Bengal . The inhabitants speak Hindi , Bengali , Tamil and Telugu and belong to the religions Hinduism , Christianity and Islam .

The indigenous ethnic group of the Greater Andaman , originally from the islands of the Ritchie's Archipelago, has disappeared as part of the colonization of the islands.

Flora and fauna

The island does not differ much from the other islands. Here, too, you will find rainforest and mangrove forest with some endemic animal species and a species-rich underwater world.

tourism

The island is one of the exceptions where tourism is actively promoted by the administration of the territory. That is why it is one of the most visited islands. Ecotourism is particularly desirable .

There is a daily ferry service from the Marine Jetty in Port Blair that is run by the government. The official tourist office maintains a guest house and a campsite on the island. But there are also resorts .
