Havneby is the main town on the Danish island of Rømø with 270 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Havneby has been part of Tønder Kommune in the Syddanmark region since the 2007 municipal reform . Before that, Havneby belonged to Skærbæk Municipality in Sønderjyllands Amt from 1970 to the end of 2006 .

Havneby located at the southeast end of the island of Romo at the end of Sekundærrute 175, about 15 km south west of Skærbæk , 6 km west of Ballum and about 11 km northeast of List on the German island of Sylt , via the ferry to the Rømø-Sylt-line reached can be.
history
Havneby was first mentioned after the sea battle on July 1, 1644 between Danish and Dutch-Swedish ships, when the sailor Gram received permission from the king to operate a jug with alcohol. Two cannons recovered from the sea from the time of the Thirty Years' War are a reminder of the sea battle that took place.
In the 19th century the Danish government wanted to build an export port at Lister Tief, the export goods should reach the port via a railway embankment. After the German-Danish War in 1864, however, Rømø became German territory and the Danish government had to abandon these plans. Instead, the port was built in Esbjerg from 1869 .
It was not until 1961 to 1964 that the port facility was built as a fishing and marina , mainly crabs were caught and processed directly in Havneby.
In 1963 the Rømø-Sylt-Linie started its ferry service. In June 2005 the SyltExpress replaced the last used ferries Vikingland and Westerland .
Hurricane Anatol devastated parts of Havneby in December 1999, and the auction hall has ceased to exist since then.
Besides the port, Havneby has also developed in terms of tourism, as several holiday home complexes, a golf course newly built in 2006 with a wellness center and some shops dominate the cityscape.
Plans to expand the port relate to the “Butendiek” offshore wind farm to be built and a mooring facility for cruise ships.
Helmodde
To the south of the harbor in front of the dike is the Helmodde nature reserve , which cannot be entered from April to October. The area was created by silt deposits and became marshland. It is a refuge and breeding ground for many wading birds such as oystercatchers , Red Knot and Bar-tailed Godwit . Also Brent geese and eider ducks have their resting place here.
