action

Japan, September 1991. The withdrawn student Shin'ichi feels constrained by his everyday life. Driven by adventurous curiosity, the 20-year-old travels to New York during the semester break in the hope of getting to know individual freedoms. In the metropolis of millions, the “most dangerous city in the world” according to literature, he also wants to face the unknown dangers. Shortly after his arrival, however, he was received in an unfriendly manner because of his lack of language skills and his few belongings were robbed. Without cash, he then strolls through the city disoriented when he meets the two Japanese-born petty criminals Lee and Takeda, whom he joins. The two daredevils grant Shin shelter and soon introduce him to their criminal machinations, which range from robbery to drug-related offenses.

The reserved Shin is fascinated by the carefree life of the two gangsters. The crimes seem like a staged game with a high fun factor, so that he first satisfies his greed for thrills through the acquaintance with the crooks. Little by little, Shin becomes part of the youth gang. The initial amusement is suddenly interrupted by an armed conflict with the New York police, led by the corrupt police officer Mike. He tries to arrest the criminals after he has stopped giving bribes , which leads to a wild shootout with fatal consequences. Takeda is fatally injured and Lee arrested. Shin remains at large alone. He becomes a cold-blooded murderer, whose first victim is the seedy Mike.

At the end of the film, the now self-confident, mentally unstable Shin travels back to Japan. Here he is harassed by a gang of young people, against whom he successfully asserts himself.
