Hedwig von Kalisch

Hedwig von Kalisch (Polish Jadwiga Kaliska ; * around 1266 ; † December 10, 1339 in Stary Sącz ) was from 1293 by marriage Duchess of Kujawien in Brest and of Sieradz , from 1306 Duchess of the Kingdom of Poland and from 1320 Queen of Poland.

Life

She was born as the daughter of Duke Bolesław the Pious , son of Duke Władysław Odonic from the Wielkopolska line of the Piasts and his wife Jolanda of Hungary, daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary and Maria Laskarina , Byzantine princess from the house of Laskaris .

On January 6, 1293, she married the future King of Poland, Władysław , Duke of Kujawy in Brest and of Sieradz, from the Piast line of Kujawi.

After the death of King Przemysław of Poland , who was her cousin, King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia seized power in Poland and her husband had to leave the country. Hedwig hid in Radziejów with her children. After four years of exile, Władysław returned to Poland to fight against the Bohemian ruler. After the death of Wenceslaus II and Wenceslaus III. Władysław was able to recapture the throne and, with the support of Hedwig, pursued a policy of unifying the Polish territories. She herself convinced the Kraków bishop Johann Muskata , one of Władysław's greatest adversaries, and on January 20, 1320, Władysław and Hedwig were crowned King and Queen of Poland in the Kraków Cathedral by Janisław, the new Archbishop of Gniezno .

After the death of her husband in 1333, Hedwig retired to the Poor Clare monastery in Stary Sącz, where she died on December 10, 1339 and was also buried.
