Brześć Kujawski ( German Brest ; also Kujawisch Brest ) is a city in Poland in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 11,500 inhabitants.

history

Archeologically, the place is known as the eponymous site of the Brześć-Kujawski culture of the second half of the 5th millennium BC. Already in the 11th / 12th In the 19th century there was a settlement on the site of today's Brześć Kujawski. The first documentary mention of the place comes from April 23, 1228. The town received the town charter in 1250. In 1236 the town became the seat of a duchy. The future King of Poland, Władysław I. Ellenlang , is said to have been born here in 1260 . In 1332 the place was conquered by the Teutonic Order , like all of Kuyavia , until King Casimir III. as part of the peace agreement with the Order of Kalisch in 1343 reacquired the land for Poland. During the second partition of Poland , the city became part of Prussia in 1793 . With the formation of the Duchy of Warsaw , Brześć Kujawski became part of it in 1807 and part of Congress Poland in 1815 in personal union with the Russian Empire . From 1918, when Polish independence was regained, the city became part of Poland. In September 1939 the Wehrmacht marched into the town. In 1945 the Red Army reached the city and Brześć Kujawski became part of Poland again.
