Pagan kidney

The Heideniere is a potato variety , which takes its name from the place of cultivation ( Luneburg Heath ) and its shape to the human kidney has received remembers.

It is characterized by a delicately spicy, greasy taste and ripens medium early, has a deep yellow flesh color, yellow skin and is waxy. This variety is resistant to tuber rot and can be easily stored.

When it was first introduced, the heathen kidney was praised as a table potato with the best properties as boiled, salad and fried potatoes. It's also good for making french fries , though the shape makes it a little difficult.

It is a cross between first and Joks , both potatoes that can no longer be found in the 2014 list of varieties.

In 2015 it was named “Potato of the Year 2015” by the Potato of the Year working group from six varieties. The nomination takes account of the fact that the diversity of varieties is a cultural asset worth protecting.

In 2014 the acreage was less than ten hectares.

history

The potato farmers from Soltau, Germany received the first approval for this special variety in 1953. However, they disappeared again just 13 years later, as the market demands bulk potatoes and no special varieties. In 1996 the potato was reactivated by the Association for the Conservation and Recultivation of Useful Plants (VERN). In 2011 they were re-admitted.
