Red emmalia

The variety 'Rote Emmalie'

The Rote Emmalie is a red-skinned, red-fleshed potato variety that has been bred by the rural potato farmer Karsten Ellenberg from Lower Saxony since 2004 . In 2012 it was included in the federal list of varieties.

Although it is a new breed, no license fees are charged by the breeder, and the variety can be distributed freely and at will. The tubers can be harvested early. The potato variety is one of the predominantly waxy potatoes and thus covers a wide range of uses. The tubers are elongated, the skin is smooth, and the "eyes" are flat. The striking pink-red meat comes from the plant pigment and antioxidant anthocyanin , which is retained even after cooking. The taste of the tuber is described as spicy, creamy-melting.

The 'Rote Emmalie' is a cross of three well-known potato varieties (' La Ratte ', ' Baltica ', ' Highland Burgundy Red ') and the old Peruvian local variety Huamantango . The breeder propagated the variety together with a farmer friend from Scotland in healthy crops. The name of the variety refers to its red color and the first name of the potato grower's grandmother.

The 'Rote Emmalie' was named Potato of the Year 2018.
