The pensioner and former wrestler Paul Krüger feels increasingly bothered by Muslim fellow citizens in his hometown of Berlin, who, in his perception, occupy an ever larger space. When a large Turkish family used the boules court of him and his two friends Eckhardt and Bernd as a barbecue area, the situation escalated and the pensioners were injured. Shortly afterwards, Krüger finds an invitation from his granddaughter Annie and her Turkish friend Deniz to their wedding in Turkey in his mailbox. After a discussion with his daughter, Annie's mother, he decides to travel to Turkey and talk Annie out of the wedding. He persuades his good friend and owner of his local bar, Karin, who is looking for a partner and urgently needs a vacation, to accompany him on the trip.

Krüger and Karin arrive shortly afterwards in Antalya and, after a brief dispute, move into a double room in an all-inclusive hotel that also accommodates Annie and where Deniz has a job as a bartender. Karin gets to know the Russian Dimitri in the elevator and begins a love affair with him. When Annie introduces her boyfriend Deniz to her grandfather, Kruger begins to ask uncomfortable questions about Deniz, until Annie angrily pulls him aside and makes it clear that if he goes on like this, he can go home again. They split up in an argument, and Krüger tries to get a German beer. He discovered the Berlin bar , where he got a beer and was approached by the Turkish Murat. He realizes that it is a gay bar and hastily leaves.

The next day Krüger, Karin and Dimitri go on a bus tour to the sights of the surrounding area. During a stop at a Turkish bazaar, where travelers stock up on carpets and other souvenirs, Krüger meets the Syrian refugee boy Omar, who puts scales for tourists in exchange for money. He gives him some money and his sunglasses.

During a stopover at an archaeological site, Krüger missed his return trip to the hotel and started walking home. He is picked up by Ahmed, who worked for an automotive company in Germany and speaks German. At the bus stop they find that there are no more buses going to Antalya. Ahmed invites Krüger to his home and after a good dinner offers him a bed under the stars. The next day, Krüger takes the bus back to Antalya and dreams of the upcoming wedding, when Deniz turns around and looks like a stereotypical Islamist .

Arriving in Antalya, Krüger meets Omar again, who offers to show him the way to the hotel. Unfortunately he cannot find the way and Kruger sends him away. When Krüger sets out on his own, he is attacked by two young men, one of whom he throws to the ground with a shoulder throw, the other, who threatens with a knife, gives his money. Omar drives the two men away with a slingshot. When Kruger calls the police, however, Omar is hiding and Kruger only asks the police for directions. Omar explains to Krüger that he is a refugee from Syria and that he has lost his parents, whereupon Krüger decides to take the boy to the hotel and give him something to eat. When he arrives at the hotel, he takes Omar to his room and on the way back from the buffet he meets Karin, who explains to him that she will travel to Saint Petersburg with Dimitri .

Krüger leaves Omar in his room and seeks Annie, whom he finds in tears. Deniz has canceled the wedding because his great-uncle, the head of the family, does not agree to it. Krüger meets Deniz at the bar and agrees to talk to his great-uncle, which Deniz initially rejects as pointless. The next day, Krüger takes Omar to a children's home for refugees and says goodbye to him. Then he meets Annie, who is packing her things, and they both decide to leave. Deniz tries to stop them and follows them to the airport, where Krüger is stopped by customs from Karin with a bag full of souvenirs. Deniz asks him to speak to his great-uncle after all, and together they leave the airport.

With Deniz's cousin, whom Krüger immediately recognizes as Murat from the gay bar and who had business in Antalya, they drive to Deniz's great-uncle in the country. The great-uncle still refuses to marry the German woman, and he and Krüger retreat to his room to talk. Both remain silent for a long time until the great-uncle looks scared at his watch and turns on the television to watch a championship in wrestling. Both comment on the fight together, and then Krüger tells him about his big World Championship fight at the World Championships in Sofia, where he fought and lost against the Turkish favorite Ali Rıza Alan at the time . The great-uncle shows him a picture in the showcase with the wrestler's autograph and then agrees to the wedding, which will take place shortly afterwards.

Back in Germany, Krüger meets his German friends and Karin in the local pub. The liaison with Dimitri didn't work, and she's dejected. At home he finds a letter and a picture with Krüger in wrestling clothes from Omar, who tells him that he is learning German and that he would like to come to Germany soon. The film ends openly.

In the ARD film description, the film is characterized as follows:

“With humor and depth, 'Krüger from Almanya' pleads for openness and tolerance in an increasingly multicultural society in which traditions of different origins are looking for their place. Horst Krause as Paul Krüger shows in an impressive way what it means to resist these changes and how little it often takes to dissolve this tension and find one another. "

In 2017, a second part of the Krüger series appeared with Krüger's Odyssey and at the beginning of 2018 a third part was published with Küss die Hand, Krüger . 2020 then the 4th part Kryger remains Krüger .

reception

The film Krüger from Almanya was described and reviewed in various media, whereby the shallow story was usually criticized. The daily newspaper (taz) called the film "Schonkaffee" and wrote:

“The motif of the xenophobic, grumpy petty bourgeois, who is initially reluctantly familiarized with Turkish culture (because he, played by Elmar Wepper , suddenly has to take care of a little 'headscarf girl'), existed four years ago in Christian Zübert's great one , unobtrusive, intense film ' Three Quarter Moon '. Marc-Andreas Bochert (book, together with Elke Rössler, and director) has now made a film that could hardly be more clichéd, simpler and more predictable. Exactly what the ARD Degeto label stood for and still stands for: light coffee. "

and adds:

"There is only one reason that 'Krüger from Almanya' is still not to be switched off: Horst Krause."

The Frankfurter Rundschau summed up the film:

“'Krüger from Almanya' is a harmless and predictable film that is meant to be friendly to strangers; But at least it does not go into every overly sweet baklava puddle. "

and the TV Spielfilm wrote:

"Naive multicultural fairy tale with a heart and top leading actors."
