Heiko Engelkes
Heiko Engelkes (born April 1, 1933 in Norden , East Frisia, † November 6, 2008 in Cologne ) was a German journalist .
Life
After graduating from high school in 1952 in his hometown, Heiko Engelkes studied law, political science and journalism in Wilhelmshaven , Hamburg and Berlin between 1952 and 1955 . He then moved to the William Allan White School of Journalism at Kansas University as a Fulbright student .
He began his journalistic career in 1956 as a freelancer for the radio program of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk and the Deutsche Allgemeine Sonntagsblatt . In 1960 he switched to Westdeutscher Rundfunk , where he worked for the Tagesschau editorial team. In 1965 he took over its management.
As a correspondent for ARD , he went to Paris in 1974 and from 1978 headed the TV station's studio. After five years, he returned to Germany in 1983 and became second editor-in-chief of ARD-aktuell , the central television newsroom of ARD. In 1991 he took over the management of the ARD studio in Paris for a second time and stayed there until his retirement in 1998.
In the last ARD daily topics before the German reunification , on October 2, 1990, Engelkes spoke the traditional commentary in front of an audience of millions from East and West. He began it with the words: "I can't really cheer yet and after this program is over I won't set off any fireworks either. The word 'Germany united fatherland' crosses my lips only hesitantly." Engelkes' comment is symbolic as a piece of contemporary history for the concerns associated with reunification about the status of the new five states and their citizens, which now function as part of the Federal Republic, but are far less well positioned.
Heiko Engelkes died late in the evening of November 6th, 2008 after suffering from cancer.
