Holy Spirit Church in Oesede

The Roman Catholic Holy Spirit Church in Georgsmarienhütte - Oesede was built from 1961 to 1964.

The church is in the southwest of Oesede. About 2200 Catholics belong to the Holy Spirit Congregation. The parish, which belongs to the Diocese of Osnabrück , forms a parish community with St. Peter and Paul (Oesede), St. Maria Frieden (Georgsmarienhütte- Harderberg ) and St. Johann / St. Marien (Oesede Monastery). The Holy Spirit Church is the highest church in the parish community. Its cross has a height of 176.313 m above sea level , followed by the Maria Frieden church at 161.536 m.

On July 22nd, 1964, after three years of construction under the direction of the architect Josef Feldwisch-Dentrup, the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Johannes von Rudloff . The structure of the church converges conically to the chancel . In line with the intentions of the Second Vatican Council , the dialogue between the church and the world , the north side of the church is glazed; Through the glass wall, the worshipers can see Oesede. Here the togetherness with the world and other communities becomes very clear. The concrete glass window on the south side of the sanctuary shows the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire. The altar cross was created around the beginning of the 18th century and stood as a wayside cross on the Thie in Oesede until around 1920. Five bells hang in the tower of the church. The three portals of the church are provided with pictures and representations. The main portal shows the spirit of creation floating above the individual works of creation.

View of the altar

Under the sanctuary there is a crypt . It was consecrated on July 22, 1964 by Abbot Albert Ohlmeye r OSB of Neuburg Abbey . Church services are celebrated here twice a week. It is dedicated to the martyrs and confessors of the 20th century. On the stairs to the crypt, a reddish glow falls through the jagged concrete glass windows created by the Ohrbeck artist Rudolf Krüger. It symbolizes the blood and barbed wire of the prisons and concentration camps of the Nazi era . The center of the crypt is the sacrificial altar made of green-gray Anröchter stone . According to the instructions of Pastor Suitbert Beckmann , the artist Manfred Espeter from Münster made frescoes for the walls of the crypt , depicting scenes from the suffering of Christ in the horror of the Nazi era ( People's Court , concentration camp and mass extermination, labor camp, torture and execution). The fresco condemned to death depicts the four Lübeck martyrs . The crypt is intended to be a reminder against forgetting and to be vigilant in the present and future.

In the years 1984/1985 the yellow clinkered church building was almost completely provided with an outer shell made of copper and lead, as there was moisture penetration.

Due to the decline in church attendance, the church building was converted into a columbarium church in 2016 and consecrated on December 17th by the Osnabrück bishop Franz-Josef Bode . As part of a modernization, the church interior was made smaller and separated from the columbarium by a glass wall. The columbarium is located above the crypt in the tower area, the former chancel.
