The Sanctuary of Innocent Children

Heiligenstatt is a district of the Tüßling market in the Upper Bavarian district of Altötting .

location

Heiligenstatt lies in the district of Tüßling, adjoins the northeastern Tüßling and in turn borders Teising in the north .

History of the pilgrimage

A legend tells of a woman from Teising who stole a host in the parish church of St. Rupert in Burgkirchen am Wald in order to sell it to Jewish traders. But on the Easter meadow the host fell to the ground and an angel appeared. The host was carried back to the church three times, but each time it returned to the Easter meadow. On April 20, 1373, the Lavant bishop Heinrich Krapff consecrated a chapel here “mainly in honor of the most holy Corpus Christi of our Lord”. In 1379 Seyfried von Toerring donated the “Beneficium corporis christi”, and to this day the church is the burial place of the owner of Schloss Tüßling . The Heiligenstätter Dult, with which the patronage on Corpus Christi was celebrated for several weeks, has been guaranteed since 1383. Later, in addition to the host, a cross was also venerated, which was reputed to mean that the real hair of the Christ figure grew back by itself. This cross is in the chancel today.

The chapel was enlarged before 1451 because of the large number of pilgrims. The octagonal pointed tower at that time was raised in 1536. Further structural changes followed in 1629, including the erection of the vault, today's dome tower was built in 1702. The property was added to the Altötting district's list of monuments with property number D-1-71-133-22 .

In 1734 it was rebuilt in the Rococo style . The builder was Sebastian Hollmayer from Teising, the stucco work was done by Georg Praun, a member of the Wessobrunn school . Nikolaus Miller from Kraiburg painted the three ceiling paintings . The painting above the choir shows the Holy Eucharist, the two pictures above the nave the history of the pilgrimage. The church has a large treasure trove of relics, including a 70 cm high monstrance made of gold and silver from 1721 with the foot relic of an "innocent child". Since the renovation in 2004, the most impressive pieces can be seen in secured display cases on the side altars. The tomb of Karl Freiherr Michel von Tüßling is in the nave of the church.

Today the Innocent Children's Day is celebrated on December 28th as a patronage. The Friends of the Pilgrimage in Heiligenstatt is endeavoring to revive the pilgrimage. A Way of the Cross with 14 stations leads from Altötting to Heiligenstatt.

Others

In Heiligenstatt there is also the home elementary school for girls run by the English Misses , a privately owned Catholic school. The elementary school with grades 3 to 6 is state recognized. The monastery of the Maria Ward Sisters was closed in 2008 due to a lack of young people. Heiligenstatt has its own stopping point on the Mühldorf – Burghausen railway line , which has been closed since 1988 but reopened on December 9, 2005.
