Heiner Schmitz (musician)

Heiner Schmitz (* 1979 in Leipzig ) is a German jazz musician ( saxophone , composition , arrangement ).

Schmitz grew up as a child in Leipzig, and since 1991 in Cologne. In 2001 he began studying jazz composition at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Bill Dobbins , Joachim Ullrich and Frank Reinshagen . There were also workshops and other classes with Dave Liebman , Jim McNeely and John Hollenbeck .

Schmitz has been a permanent member of the crossover band Jazzkantine since 2010 , with whom he has recorded several albums and implemented theater projects at the Braunschweig State Theater . In 2012 he realized the album Odyssey with the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and Christian Brückner ; The large ensemble project Sins & Blessings followed in 2015 , which was first produced for Deutschlandfunk . He recorded a DVD with the Wednesday Night Big Band . He has performed at numerous festivals such as Elbjazz , Jazzfest Gronau , Jazz Fest Wien or the Burghauser Jazz Week , most recently at the Jazzfest Bonn 2017 with his quintet Organic Underground (album of the same name at A-Jazz 2018).

Schmitz wrote compositions and arrangements for big band, which were performed by the Federal Jazz Orchestra , the NDR Big Band , the hr Big Band and the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. He has also orchestrated for symphony orchestras such as the Braunschweig State Orchestra , the Bergische Symphoniker and the Duisburg Sound Power Orchestra. He also wrote film scores for short and industrial films . Since 2011 he has been teaching jazz theory and composition at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences .

2017 he was recognized for his merit to the Jazz in Erftstadt with the Great Culture Award Erftstadt excellent. In 2019 he received the WDR Jazz Prize (composition).
