Heinrich Basedow (born January 1, 1896 in Berlin ; † April 12, 1994 in Kiel ) was a German portrait, animal and flower painter and wood sculptor. To distinguish it from his father of the same name , who was also a visual artist, he is called Heinrich Basedow the Younger . He only called himself that after the death of his father, previously he used the stage name Heinz Basedow .

After his first painting lessons with his father, he studied from 1915/1916 at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar under Robert Weise , then was called to the Navy.

In 1919 he returned to Weimar and studied at the Bauhaus Weimar with Lionel Feininger , Gerhard Marcks and Johannes Itten until 1921 . He became a supporter of the New Objectivity . He then trained as a wood sculptor in Potsdam until 1924 .

From 1924 to 1926 he studied theology and philosophy of religion at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. Then he went on a three-month hike from Potsdam to Cologne with his friend Ernst Sander , a grandson of Theodor Storm .

From 1924 to 1936 Basedow worked as a freelance painter in Potsdam. Since 1927 he took part in art exhibitions. In 1930 he joined the NSDAP , became a member of the SA and in April 1934 was promoted to Sturmbannführer . In 1935 he was the mayor of Potsdam, Hans Friedrichs , the councilors appointed and was then in this function advisory board member of the Municipal Heritage Museum.

During the Second World War he served as a naval officer in Kiel. There he met the painter Willi Langbein . After the war, released from a POW camp in December 1946, Heinrich Basedow lived with him for a while at Rönner Weg 45, then he moved into an apartment at Rönner Weg 37.

In 1947 he was classified in the first denazification process in the group of the incriminated (category III), but one year later, in 1948, in a second process after an objection and submission of several affidavits by decision of a ruling, he was classified as a follower (category IV).

After the war, Basedow showed his works in the Kiel Kunsthalle in 1969 and in the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum in 1986 .

In 1978 he was to be awarded the culture prize of the city of Kiel endowed with DM 10,000 . But after his memberships and functions had become known during the National Socialist era, there were considerable protests against it, which led him to forego the award.

Basedow designed the stained glass windows, the crown of lights and other works of art in the forest chapel "For Eternal Consolation" in Neuwühren .

Heinrich Basedow the Younger died at the age of 98.

In contrast to his father, who painted his pictures with an impressionistic temperament, he created his small-format works with the meticulousness of New Objectivity and a certain naivety of an amateur artist.
