Heinrich Bolzenthal

Heinrich Eduard Bolzenthal (* 1796 in Cottbus , † 1870 in Berlin) was a German numismatist .

Life

The son of a pastor studied political science, history and philosophy in Halle from 1815 to 1819 (as a fellow student of Karl Immermann ). After completing his studies, he stayed briefly in Berlin and then accepted General Ernst von Rüchel's invitation to his Haseleu estate in Pomerania. Bolzenthal continued his studies here for a few years. On his return to Berlin, on the recommendation of Friedrich Wilken and Johann Wilhelm Süvern, he took part in the planning of the Royal Museums and was director of the coin and medal collection from 1835 to 1868 .

Bolzenthal published several works on the historical coinage of the early modern period, which Friedrich Buchholz in particular had inspired. One of his best-known works are the sketches on the art history of modern medal work (1429–1840) (Berlin 1840). On the occasion of his retirement in 1868, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, third class with ribbon, for his services .
