Heinrich Buchenau

Heinrich Buchenau (born April 20, 1862 in Bremen , † May 15, 1931 in Munich ) was a German numismatist .

Life

Heinrich Buchenau was the eldest son of the Bremen botanist and educator Franz Georg Philipp Buchenau and his wife Margarethe Auguste nee. Adami († 1905). He studied philology and history at the universities of Leipzig, Jena and Strasbourg, where he received his doctorate in 1887. After graduating, he first went to school and taught geography and history at the Sophienstift in Weimar . During this time he began to work on a part-time basis in the field of numismatics of the Middle Ages , which led to numerous publications in the numismatic field. From 1908 to 1927 he was curator at the State Coin Collection in Munich and organized its medieval holdings according to scientific principles. Since 1916 he has been an honorary professor for medieval numismatics and monetary history at the University of Munich .

Heinrich Buchenau was editor of the Blätter für Münzfreunde from 1899 to 1928 , in which he published many of his essays. His written estate is in the State Coin Collection in Munich . His coin collection was auctioned off near Helbing in Munich in 1931.

The publisher and book designer Siegfried Buchenau was his son. The merchant and art collector Siegfried Buchenau was a brother of Heinrich.
