Heinrich Burger (born March 13, 1941 in Breslau ) is a German grandmaster in correspondence chess .

Correspondence chess

Burger has been playing correspondence chess since 1964. He took part in the semifinals of the 11th World Cup. Before that, he finished 2nd at the 13th German Correspondence Chess Championship in 1972/75, tied with the winner Dünhaupt, but with a worse score.

He received the title of International Master in 1986 when he scored 6 out of 11 points on the first board of the 10th Correspondence Chess Olympiad for the GDR. At the finals of the 10th Olympiad he again competed for the GDR with the result 7 out of 9. Curiously, these Olympics ended in 1995, several years after reunification, when the GDR no longer existed.

At the next Olympics he played in the all-German team with the result 8 out of 12. The team won the gold medal.

The ICCF awarded him the title of Correspondence Chess Grandmaster for his performance .

His rating in correspondence chess is 2509 (as of July 1, 2009).

Close chess

Burger also achieved a considerable playing strength in close-up chess. Despite the Berlin Wall, he was able to play chess in the west and east. In the 1975/76 season he fought in the West Berlin club Lasker Steglitz in the 1st Bundesliga . From 1979 to 1989 he played for AdW Berlin in the GDR league.

After the reunification he moved to the club SC Oranienburg and from 2003 to VfB Hermsdorf .

In 2010 he won the title of Berlin senior individual champion.

President of the Berlin Chess Association

From March 1974 to autumn 1976 Heinrich Burger was President of the Berlin Chess Association . In 1974, he replaced Alfred Kinzel in this role . In the association magazine Mitteilungsblatt he introduced himself with a photo and a small profile: married, 6-year-old daughter, journalist, press spokesman for the SPD state executive , club champion at SVg Lasker-Steglitz in 1974 and Berlin champion with his club in 1974.

As a police reporter, he took the first photos of Benno Ohnesorg on June 2, 1967 . 1976 as a spokesman for the Berlin SPD was Heinrich Burger as DDR - Agent unmasked and arrested. That is why the Berlin Chess Association called an extraordinary association day in December, on which Hans OK Werner was elected as the new president. Burger was sentenced to seven years in prison on May 23, 1977, but was soon able to leave West Berlin for the GDR. It was exchanged on the Glienicke Bridge for agents and political prisoners imprisoned in the GDR (among them Matthias Bath, who was convicted of helping to escape in the GDR ).

His exposure as a GDR agent came about through the testimony of his divorced wife Kathryn Burger, who was also the press spokeswoman for the ÖTV trade union in Berlin (West) , who was also arrested for espionage for the GDR .
