Alfred Kinzel (born September 28, 1912 in Berlin ; † August 17, 2004 in Neuruppin ) was President of the German Chess Federation from 1975 to 1983 .

Kinzel was chairman of the Berlin Chess Association from 1965 to 1974 . In 1966 he became 2nd Vice President of the German Chess Federation, in 1971 1st Vice President. After the death of President Ludwig Schneider , he became President in 1975. He held this office until 1983.

During his tenure, he set the course to convert the German Chess Federation to a professional structure. To this end, an office was set up in Berlin and Horst Metzing, a full-time managing director, was employed. He also initiated a central member database. During his term of office, the single-track 1st  Chess League was founded . He campaigned for chess to be recognized as a non-profit.

From 1971 to 1986 he represented the German Chess Federation at FIDE .

Chess player

Kinzel was also a strong chess player. In 1957 and 1961 he won the German team championship with his club, the Berlin Chess Society 1827 Eckbauer . Since 1999, after moving to Neuruppin, he played at Märkischer SV, which is located there .

Private

Alfred Kinzel was married to Gertrud Kinzel. He worked in the police service in Berlin.
