Hermann Twenty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolph Julius Hermann Zwanzig (born May 1, 1837 in Müelte in the Neumark, † January 6, 1894 in Gera ) was a German chess official . He was the first (and only) general secretary of the German Chess Federation, founded in 1877, and in office until his death.

Life

Hermann Zwanzig was born as the son of Gottfried August Zwanzig and Johanna Rosina Friedericke Kunnsel on May 1st, 1837 in Müelte in the Neumark. On June 22, 1868 he married Katharine Christiane Loewer (born January 24, 1849). The marriage remained childless.

Hermann Zwanzig was a merchant by trade and traded with lace . This activity forced him to travel a lot in Germany, during which he also got to know many chess clubs, which he invited to join the newly founded German Chess Federation. Twenty himself was a member of the Leipzig chess club Augustea and its cashier.

On January 6, 1894, Zwanzig probably died of a heart attack on a business trip in Gera.

German Chess Federation

Hermann Zwanzig was one of the most active founding members of the German Chess Federation (DSB) on July 18, 1877 in Leipzig . He was entrusted with the management of the federal government and elected Secretary General for life. At the first DSB congress on July 15, 1879 in Leipzig, the statutes of the German Chess Federation, which he helped to work on, were adopted.

Twenty headed the German Chess Federation almost single-handedly. After Zwanzig's death, Siegbert Tarrasch prompted the following words in Deutsche Wochenschach : " So far, twenty has been everything: chairman, treasurer, secretary, congress leader. ... This monstrous relationship must end. Not one person has to do everything, but the individual functions have to be distributed ". However, the change from the sole ruling general secretary to a multi-member executive board only succeeded after 1900.

The successor to Zwanzig was Max Lange , who initially took over the management on an interim basis.

Tournament organizer

Twenty was known as an organizer of chess tournaments. The Leipziger led the tournament of the Association of German Chess Masters in Berlin from July 21 to 26, 1890 . Theodor von Scheve , the chairman of the association, was so enthusiastic about Zwanzig's work that he made the DSB General Secretary an honorary member.

Others

Around 1911 there was a chess club in Berlin with the name of Hermann Zwanzig.
