Eduard Brockhaus

Heinrich Eduard Brockhaus (born August 7, 1829 in Leipzig ; † January 11, 1914 there ) was a German publisher and politician ( NLP ).

Life

His father was the Leipzig publisher Heinrich Brockhaus . He attended until 1847 at the Thomas School in Leipzig , studied in Leipzig, Heidelberg and Berlin and graduated with a doctorate to Dr. phil. from. This was followed by an apprenticeship in publishing in the family business. After a short time he received power of attorney and became a partner. After the death of his father, he ran the company together with his brother Rudolf. He was primarily responsible for the printing company. He himself took care of the actual publishing business. Between 1857 and 1883 he himself edited the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, which appeared in his publishing house .

Like his father, Brockhaus took care of the interests of publishers and printers. From 1872 to 1886 he was chairman of the German Book Printers Association and from 1880 to 1894 of the Association of Booksellers in Leipzig. He was also a leading member of the German Booksellers Association . From 1892 to 1895 he was the first director there, and later he was an honorary member. Brockhaus suggested various historical works of the Börsenverein and was one of the main founders of the historical commission of the association. Although he was initially skeptical, he advocated reforming the book trade. The aim was to contribute to the recovery of the retail book trade .

Like his father, Brockhaus was also generally politically active. Between 1871 and 1878 he was a member of the Reichstag (German Empire) for the National Liberal Party . There he played a role in formulating press laws and copyright law. He was a follower of Otto von Bismarck and visited him several times after his release. Brockhaus published various writings. Among them was a biography of his grandfather Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus and a company history of the publishing house for the anniversary in 1905.

He was married to Emilia (Milly) born in 1854. Weisz. The couple had six sons, including the publishers Albert Brockhaus and Fritz Brockhaus and the art historian Heinrich Brockhaus .
