Albert Brockhaus

Albert Eduard Brockhaus (born September 2, 1855 in Leipzig ; † March 27, 1921 there ) was a German publisher and politician .

Life

Brockhaus was born in 1855 as the son of Eduard Brockhaus . He first attended the Schnepfenthal educational institution and, until 1875, the Thomas School in Leipzig . He studied at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the University of Strasbourg . Together with his brother, he ran the FA Brockhaus lexicon publisher from 1881 to 1921 . In 1893 he was honored with a portrait unveiling by King Albert of Saxony in the German Booksellers House. From 1890 to 1910 he was a member of the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and from 1911 its honorary member. Brockhaus was first chairman and later honorary member of the German Booksellers Association from 1901 to 1907 . In this position he enforced fixed book prices against Karl Bücher . In 1912 he wrote the Lexicon Testament. Brockhaus was close friends with Sven Hedin .

Politician

When the Saxon King Friedrich August III. A freely chosen member, Brockhaus was a member of the First Chamber of the Landtag in the Kingdom of Saxony from 1911 until the constitutional monarchy was abolished in November 1918 .

Awards

He was Commander II. Class of the Saxon Order of Albrecht and the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus with a breast star, holder of the Prussian Red Eagle Order IV. Class, the Duke Saxon-Ernestine House Order I Class, the Bulgarian Medal for Science and Art , Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy and the French Legion of Honor .
