Heinrich Franz Graf von Bombelles (born June 26, 1789 in Versailles , † March 31, 1850 in Savenstein in Lower Carniola ) was an Austrian diplomat , officer and educator of the future Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Life

Bombelles was the son of the French general, diplomat and later Bishop of Amiens Marc Marie Marquis de Bombelles and Princess Angélique de Mackau .

He joined Austrian military service in 1805, fought in Italy and in 1813 as a captain in the Battle of Leipzig . He later accompanied Count Merveldt to London and took part in the 1815 campaign as an adjutant to Archduke Ferdinand. Later he became envoy to Petersburg, then to the Portuguese and finally to the Turin court. In 1836 he took over the education of the grandchildren of Emperor Franz II , later Emperor Franz Joseph, and his brothers in Vienna , and in May 1848 he accompanied them on their flight to Innsbruck .

Metternich considered Heinrich Franz von Bombelles to be the suitable tutor of the future heir to the throne: “I rank Bombelles among the small number of people who, because of an innate inclination, thought what I thought, saw what I saw and wanted what I did wanted. ” Bombelles was considered one of the most outstanding pillars of ecclesiastical influence at court. As a result, he was hated by the opposition-minded section of the population. During the revolution of 1848/49 the revolutionaries called him "Judas, the arch rogue" and hung puppets depicting him as the "originator of all evil" .

He died on March 31, 1850 on his rule Savenstein in Lower Carniola in what is now Slovenia .

His brother, Ludwig Philipp von Bombelles , was also an Austrian diplomat and confidante of Metternich. Charles-René de Bombelles (1785-1856), his other brother, was chief steward and minister at the court of Parma and the third husband of Marie-Louise of Austria .
