Heinrich Fuss (also: Fuß ; * July 7, 1845 in Guntramsdorf ; † December 10, 1913 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

The son of an impoverished mill owner attended the lower secondary school in Vienna and was supposed to embark on a commercial career. Due to his talent for drawing, however, his mother apprenticed him to a stonemason . Up to the age of 20 he worked in various workshops, then he studied with his savings at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . After two years he interrupted his studies and worked for the court sculptor Lavigne and then in Budapest , where he carried out sculptures for public buildings. In 1869 he resumed studies at the Vienna Academy and was accepted into Carl Kundmann 's master school, which he graduated with honors. In 1878 he became a teacher of sculpture at the newly founded State Trade School in Innsbruck, where he taught until 1907. In 1880 he received the professional title of professor . In 1881 he married Marie Mayer from Innsbruck.

Fuss created monuments, tombs and numerous portrait busts. Both his romantic style and his predilection for allegories show him as a student of Kundmann. He took part in the competition for the Tegetthoff monument in Pola , which Carl Kundmann won. But Fuss' design was so well received that after long negotiations he was awarded the contract for the Tegetthoff monument in Marburg , which was unveiled in 1883 and represents his main work.
