Heinrich Hammer (born March 19, 1873 in Schruns , Vorarlberg , † January 8, 1953 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian art historian .

Life

Heinrich Hammer, the son of an administrative lawyer, initially studied history, art history and geography in Innsbruck and, after moving to Vienna , shifted his interest entirely to art history. He began the course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in 1895, but left in December 1895 and returned to Innsbruck, where he received his doctorate in 1897 under Josef Hirn (1848–1917) and Ludwig von Pastor . First he entered the middle school service and taught in Trieste and Innsbruck. In 1908 he received his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck, against the resistance of the professor Hans Semper (1845-1920).

In September 1920 he was appointed professor of art history ad personam, alongside Moritz Dreger (1868–1939) , who had been a new professor since 1917 . After he moved to Vienna in 1926, Hammer was appointed full professor and head of the Institute of Art History on February 24, 1927. He retired in September 1939, but Hammer continued to teach for a few years because his successor Werner Körte (1905–1945) was unable to teach due to his military service.

His research area was mainly the history of art in Tyrol , about which he published numerous books and magazine articles. From 1907 he worked on the Thieme-Becker artist lexicon , from 1916 he was entrusted with the coordination of articles relating to Tyrol.

In 1950 he was awarded the Innsbruck Ring of Honor. In 1962 the (no longer existing) Hammergasse in the Innsbruck district of Höttinger Au was named after him.
