Heinrich Johann Pölzl (born January 8, 1925 in Neuberg an der Mürz ; † March 31, 2016 in Graz ) was an Austrian visual artist , art educator and educator.

Life

Pölzl was the first child of Emil Pölzl and Josefa Pölzl nee. Friesenbichler. He spent his childhood in Hüttenberg (Carinthia) , the high school time at the boarding school in Traiskirchen, from where he was drafted as a radio operator on the Finnish-Soviet border while still at school. After the war he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Albert Paris Gütersloh . From 1952 the center of life was Graz. Here he taught art and craft education at the former BEA (now BG / BORG Graz Liebenau ) and at the University of Education in Graz until his retirement in 1987. In his many years of activity as a teacher, not only his artistic experience and his art-historical knowledge, but also his unconventional approach at the time, shaped the students.

As a painter, graphic artist, draftsman, but also as an art mediator, he is one of those personalities in the Styrian art scene who have decisively shaped “Styrian Modernism”. He left behind a diverse and complex work, an extensive collection of paintings, graphics, objects, sketchbooks and works in public spaces.

His pictures have been shown in numerous personal and group exhibitions at home and abroad, and his work is represented in private and public collections (Albertina, BMuKK, Neue Galerie, City of Graz, etc.).

Heinrich J. Pölzl joined Günter Waldorf's group of painters, was a founding member and has been associated with Forum Stadtpark for decades. Decisive for belonging to this group were their optimistic mood, the clear commitment to overcoming the reactionary, the opening up to international art movements, the principle of multiparty and the changing speakers. He has been active in the visual arts department since the beginning, headed it in the 1970s and curated numerous exhibitions. This period shaped his life through contacts and friendships with other visual artists ( Günter Waldorf , Elga Maly, Hannes Schwarz , Luis Sammer, Friedrich Aduatz , Siegfried Neuburg , Gustav Zankl, Mario Decleva , Ferdinand Penker , Fritz Panzer, Peter Pongratz , Arnulf Rainer ) and through the engagement with architecture, literature, music and film that takes place here.

Create

His abstract painting, which ranges from constructivist approaches to lyrical natural abstractions, surrealist images, architectural forms to calligraphy in a wide variety of materials, makes clear classifications difficult in its diversity, but over the decades formal and content interlocking that make up the characteristic of his art : Punctuation and compression, transformation and reduction.

He was an observer, a collector; Landscape, architecture and nature were an important source and inspiration for him; they can be found in his pictures as an eruptive and narrative play of forms. His pictures are an expression of the confrontation with the world, but also an indication of a constant questioning of one's own actions, which demands a determination of one's position. In one of his pictures you can find the text “Wanderer, there is no way. The path only arises when you walk ”, which aptly stands as the motto for his work.

On the occasion of a personal in the Künstlerhaus in 2006, Werner Fenz writes about the “diversity of signs” , which “ stand beyond the schematic classification of 'abstract' or 'non-representational' and with their specific configuration embody a unique position in the Styrian art landscape. By shaping and deforming the everyday into an artistic view, Heinrich J. Pölzl creates an often winding path through art while walking; convinced that this leads in new directions through a variety of sign language. "
