Heinrich Janssen (dialect poet)

Heinrich Janssen (commonly known as Hein Janssen ; born February 23, 1856 in Neutral-Moresnet ; † January 27, 1938 in Aachen ) was a German coppersmith and dialect poet .

Live and act

Heinrich Janssen grew up with twelve siblings and was the son of Heinrich Matthias Janssen (1830–1913) from Venlo and Christina Nacken (1832–1909) from Dürwiß . The father was initially employed in the Galmeigruben of Neutral-Moresnet and from 1860 he ran his own "workshop for brewery equipment, copper foundry and forge" at the Templergraben (then the pig market) and later at the foot of the Lousberg in Aachen. After his death, his sons Heinrich and Karl Janssen (1858–1933) took over the workshop. Although he had trade contacts in Hamburg , Bruges , Stockholm and the Heerlen - Maastricht area and counted numerous breweries, distilleries and restaurants in Aachen among his regular customers, Heinrich Janssen had to cease operations as early as 1919 due to the effects of the First World War .

Janssen, however, had a second mainstay with which he had built a considerable reputation early on. From his earliest youth he showed an interest in the Oecher Platt and began to write his first plays in this dialect in the 1880s. In the course of the next few decades there were to be more than 30 one- to multi-act plays, the majority of which were published as books and performed at several Volksbühnen. In addition, he wrote regular columns for “Echo der Gegenwart”, was a co-founder of the Oecher Platt association and in 1921 co-founder of the Aachen city puppet theater Öcher Schängche , whose literary director he was from 1923.

Hein Janssen, as he was now commonly known, died on January 27, 1938 and found his final resting place in the family crypt on Aachen's Westfriedhof . In 1956 a street was named after him on the occasion of his 100th birthday in Aachen. For his 160th birthday in 2016, an extensive exhibition lasting several weeks was organized by the Aachen Lousberg Society in the Kerstens pavilion .
