Life

In the inter-war period Heinrich von Kralik worked as a music critic for the “Neue Wiener Tagblatt” and as a music writer. His opera introductions in the “Tagblatt-Bibliothek” became very popular, of which around a hundred volumes were published between 1924 and 1950. His work on the Vienna Philharmonic , published in 1937, was forbidden during the National Socialist era . He himself was banned from any journalistic work because he did not separate from his “non-Aryan” wife.

In 1945, when Austria was resurrected, he was appointed head of the music department of RAVAG (Österreichischer Rundfunk). One of his main achievements there was the first renaissance of the works of Gustav Mahler, who had been ostracized in the years before . Soon he was also employed as a music critic by the newly founded newspaper “ Die Presse ”. In the following years he published a number of important works, most of which have also appeared in English and French translations.

His standard work on Richard Strauss (1963) was the result of many years of friendly contact with the composer. His circle of friends also included numerous other important musicians and writers, from his childhood friends Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Stefan Zweig up to Furtwängler, Böhm and Karajan .

Appreciation
